New camera
I've recently gotten my first DSLR, the Sony A100.
Why did I pick this one rather than the standard choice of a Canon? Well, mainly because I had an existing pile of Minolta lenses, remote shutter release and so on and it seemed the best way to go rather than forking out for a load of new kit on top of the camera itself! I did get the kit with the 18-70mm lens though. Of course, I didn't want to buy it and find it was rubbish, so I did some research first, and the dpreview web site helped out here (DPReview Sony A100).
The main downside that people seem to come up with is that the higher ISO images can be quite noisy compared to some other cameras. I'd agree with this - there is more noise, although some magazine image comparisons have shown that there is more detail too - some of the less noisy images lose a lot of detail in the softening, so its all swings and roundabouts!
Anyway, I'll soon be posting some more of my experiences with the camera, and I'll be uploading some images to the puffle site too. To get things started, here is a nice picture of Cleo the cat! Nothing spectacular, but hand-held with an exposure time of 1/15 sec shows that the image stabiliser in the A100 can be quite handy too... (click for the full size image)
